Do You Need a Website If You Already Have Instagram?

Instagram and WhatsApp can run a small business for a while, and a website is not always the next step. How to tell when you have outgrown them, and what a first website actually needs.

For a lot of small businesses in Indonesia, Instagram and WhatsApp are the business. Customers find you on Instagram, ask questions in the DMs and pay by transfer. If that is working, the question “do I need a website as well?” can sound like a sales pitch from someone who builds websites. So here is an honest answer, including the situations where the answer is no.

The short answer

Not on day one, but probably sooner than you think. Instagram is a very good place to be discovered by people who are already scrolling, to show your work and to talk to customers. It is a poor place to be the only place you exist, because you do not control it. The more useful question is not “is a website mandatory?” but “what is not having one costing me right now?”

When Instagram and WhatsApp alone are enough

There are real situations where a website can wait:

  • You are still testing the idea. DMs are a fast way to learn what customers ask for and how they describe what they want. A website is easier to write well once you know that.
  • You are fully booked through referrals and want to stay that size. If word of mouth already fills your calendar, a website adds cost without adding much.
  • You have a handful of large, high-touch clients. If your business is a few big contracts won through personal relationships, people check you out through other people, not through Google.

Signs you have outgrown Instagram-only

  • You answer the same questions every day. Prices, opening hours, location, how to order, how long delivery takes. If you keep pasting the same replies into DMs, that is a page waiting to be written.
  • People cannot find you unless they already know your name. Someone searching Google for what you sell in your area is more likely to see websites, map listings and directories than an individual Instagram profile. Instagram helps people who have already found you. A website and a Google Business Profile help people who are still looking.
  • Bigger purchases need more trust. A stranger about to pay a deposit, book a stay or hire a contractor wants to see who you are, where you are, what you offer and what you have done, in one place and without scrolling a feed.
  • You want to run search ads. Google search ads typically send people to a web page. Meta ads can lead to WhatsApp or Instagram, but a page you control lets you explain the offer properly and see what visitors actually do.
  • One account carries the whole business. Accounts get hacked, restricted or lose reach when the platform changes. If losing access to a single account would stop your sales, that is a risk worth reducing.
  • Enquiries and orders get lost. Bookings buried in long DM threads and missed messages cost real money. A simple form or booking page gives you a record and a routine.

What a website gives you that Instagram cannot

  • You own it. There is no algorithm deciding who sees your page, and no feed of other people’s posts competing with it.
  • Google can find it. A website can appear when someone searches for your service, which is different from being discovered while scrolling. Pair it with a complete Google Business Profile and you also show up in map results.
  • One place for answers. Services, price ranges, location, opening hours and how to book, written once and always available.
  • You can measure it. You can see how many people visit, where they came from and what they clicked, which is the starting point for fixing things. If a site already gets visitors but no messages, our guide to why a website gets visitors but no enquiries covers the usual causes.
  • It looks established. For many customers, especially international ones who cannot visit first, a clear website reads as a business that is here to stay.

What Instagram still does better

Instagram is much better at showing your work as it happens, building a community and keeping past customers warm. A website is a poor replacement for that. A useful way to think about it: Instagram is the shop window, and the website is the shop. The window brings people in. The shop is where they get answers and take action. Most businesses need both, doing different jobs.

What a first website actually needs

Smaller than most people expect. For most small businesses a first site is one strong home page or a handful of pages, not a full build with every possible feature.

  • What you do, who it is for and where you work, said plainly in the first screen.
  • Real photos of your actual work, place or product.
  • One clear next step, such as a WhatsApp button, an enquiry form or a booking link, that visitors can see without hunting for it.
  • Your address, map and opening hours (or your service area), matching your Google Business Profile exactly.
  • Links in both directions: your Instagram on the site, and your website in your Instagram bio.
  • Fast loading on a phone, because most visitors will arrive on one.

Leave the blog, online shop and custom features until the basics have proven themselves. Our guide to what a small business website costs explains what actually drives the price.

A quick way to decide

Answer these four questions honestly:

  1. Do people ask you the same questions again and again?
  2. Could a stranger who searches Google for your service find you and trust what they see?
  3. Would you lose a meaningful part of your business if your Instagram account disappeared tomorrow?
  4. Are you planning to spend money on ads, or on being found in search?

If you answered yes to two or more, a simple website is worth building. If you answered yes to none, carry on as you are and revisit the question when the business changes.

If you run a restaurant or cafe, the same logic applies with a few local twists, which we cover in our guide to restaurant and cafe marketing in Bali.

If your business runs on Instagram and WhatsApp today and you are not sure whether a website is the right next step, we can look at it with you. Our social media and website and technology work starts with a plain-language look at where your enquiries come from now, and you can tell us about your business to begin.
