Email Marketing for Small Businesses: Is It Still Worth Setting Up in 2026?

Email gets less attention than social media, but it is often the cheapest channel that is entirely yours. A practical, no-hype look at whether it is worth setting up, and how to start small.

Email marketing gets a fraction of the attention social media does, largely because it is less visible — nobody scrolls past your newsletter the way they scroll past a feed. That makes it easy to assume it is outdated. For most small businesses it is the opposite: it is often the cheapest channel that is entirely yours, with no algorithm deciding who sees it. Whether it is worth setting up depends less on the year and more on whether you already have people worth staying in touch with.

Why it still matters when the attention is on social media

A social media following is rented. The platform decides how many of your followers see a given post, can change that formula without notice, and could in principle disappear or restrict your account entirely. An email list is closer to owned: once someone has subscribed, you can reach them directly, and the relationship does not depend on a platform’s algorithm staying favourable. That does not make email better than social media — they do different jobs — but it is the reason a list is worth building even while social stays the more visible channel.

It is also inexpensive to start. Most small businesses can run a modest list on a free or low-cost plan, with no media spend at all, which is not true of most other channels once you want reliable reach.

When it is actually worth setting up

Email marketing earns its place when at least one of these is true:

  • You already have customers or past enquiries you are not currently staying in touch with.
  • Repeat business or referrals matter to your revenue, not just one-off sales.
  • You are already producing content — articles, case studies, updates — that could be reused instead of written twice.

It is a lower priority if there is no list to start from yet, if the business runs almost entirely on word of mouth with little repeat contact, or if nobody can commit to sending something on a schedule, even a slow one. An email list that goes quiet for six months does less harm than a list that never existed, but it also does very little good.

How to start small

  1. Pick one simple platform with a free tier for your current list size, rather than the most feature-rich option. You can change tools later; you cannot easily recover months you spent not sending anything.
  2. Add a visible way to sign up — a form on the site, a line in an invoice, a mention where you already talk to customers — rather than hoping people find it.
  3. Send one honest, recurring email before attempting anything more complex: a short update, a useful note, a recent piece of work. Consistency matters more than cleverness here.
  4. Leave segmentation and automation until you have a specific reason for them. A single list sent to sensibly is better than a complicated setup nobody maintains.
  5. Track opens and clicks against actual replies, enquiries or bookings, not just how many emails went out. The list is only useful if it leads somewhere.

What good enough looks like

As with most small business marketing, the failure mode is not sending the wrong email — it is starting with an ambitious plan, sending twice, and stopping. A short, plain email sent reliably every month will outperform an elaborate campaign that runs once. If the current channels are not converting the way they should, our note on why a site gets visitors but no enquiries is a useful place to look first, since a weak list is often a symptom of the same underlying gap: traffic and content that are not connected to a clear next step.

If you would rather someone else set the list up, write the first few sends and keep it running on a schedule, that is part of what our digital outsourcing work covers. Get in touch if you want a second opinion on whether it is worth prioritising right now.
