.com or .id? How to Choose a Domain Name for Your Indonesian Business
Should your Indonesian business use .com, .id or .co.id? What Google says about country signals, who each .id extension is for under PANDI's policy, and a short checklist.
zabil
Sooner or later every Indonesian business owner asks the same question: should the website be a .com, a .id, or a .co.id? Registrars naturally promote what they sell, and a lot of online advice stops at “it depends”. This guide uses two primary sources instead: Google’s documentation on how it works out which country a site is for, and the registration policy published by PANDI, the manager of Indonesia’s .id domain names.
The short answer
- If your customers are mostly in Indonesia, a .id domain is a reasonable fit and sends a clear country signal.
- If a large share of your customers are overseas, a .com is usually the simpler choice. Think of villas, tours and wellness retreats that sell to foreign guests.
- In both cases the ending is one signal among several. What you can keep for years, and own in your own name, matters more than the extension.
What Google says about country signals
Google’s guide to multi-regional sites lists the signals it uses to decide who a site is for. The first is the country-code domain. It says these are tied to a specific country and “provide a strong signal to both users and search engines that your site is explicitly intended for a certain country”. It also warns: “Some countries have restrictions on who can use ccTLDs, so be sure to do your research first.” The .id ending is not on the short list of country-code domains that Google says it treats as generic, although Google notes that the list may change.
The same guide lists the trade-offs of a country-specific domain. On the plus side, the targeting is clear. On the minus side, it can be expensive or have limited availability, it sometimes comes with strict requirements, and it can only target a single country.
That last point is the one to think about if you serve visitors from abroad. Google says that geotargeting a site “can improve your page rankings in the target country, but at the expense of results in other locales or languages.” A Bali villa that depends on European and Australian guests is in a different position from, say, an accounting firm that only serves local companies.
What about a .com for an Indonesian audience?
A .com is a generic domain, so it carries no country signal on its own. Google’s page says a site with a generic domain that wants to reach a particular location should set a country target using the explicit methods in the guide, which are locale-specific URLs, hreflang annotations and sitemaps. The old Search Console country setting is gone: Google’s help page says it “was determined to have little value for the ecosystem, and is no longer supported.”
So a .com can serve Indonesia, but the country has to come from the rest of the site. Google lists those other signals: “local addresses and phone numbers on the pages, the use of local language and currency, links from other local sites, or signals from your Business Profile”. It also says it ignores locational meta tags such as geo.position, so there is no tag to add.
What each .id extension is for
PANDI’s domain name registration policy, version 9.0 dated 30 September 2024, divides the .id family by who it is meant for:
- .co.id is for legal or business entities that operate in Indonesia. The registration requirements it lists include the NIB (Business Identity Number) and an identity document such as an e-KTP or passport, plus a brand certificate or power of attorney where the domain relates to a brand.
- .biz.id is for individuals, organisations or business entities at the micro, small and medium enterprise level.
- .web.id is for the general public.
- .my.id is for other individuals, organisations or entities.
- .id on its own is for a person or individual, whether an Indonesian citizen or a foreigner, or a legal entity.
Two rules apply across the board. Every Indonesian domain must be registered with a verified email address, and a registration can be for one year or up to ten. Registrants need identity or legal documents and an address, and PANDI can ask a registrar to reject a registration that uses false information or fake documents.
Treat this as a guide, not a final word. The policy is dated 2024, and the sections we read do not cover name length or restricted words, so confirm the current requirements with your registrar before you pay.
Which one fits which business
Here is how we would think about it:
- A registered company serving Indonesian customers (a PT or CV): .co.id fits the purpose PANDI describes, as long as you have the NIB and documents ready.
- A small local business, a shop or a freelancer: .biz.id, .my.id or a plain .id are workable options.
- Tourism, property or wellness businesses with overseas guests: a .com is usually the safer main domain, with the language versions described in our post on multilingual websites for Bali businesses.
- Both audiences: choose one main domain, and if you also register the other, redirect it to the main one rather than running two sites with the same content.
None of this is a ranking trick. The extension tells Google which country a site is meant for, not that the site is better.
What matters more than the ending
Whichever you choose, the country signals Google lists are the ones you control: your address and phone number on the page, the language and currency you use, links from local sites and a complete Google Business Profile. If you sell to tourists, our guide to getting more direct bookings and the post on marketing a tour or wellness business show where the domain fits in the bigger picture.
Do not switch domains casually
Changing from one domain to another is a site move. Google’s guidance on moving a site lists domain name changes, “such as example.com to example.net”, among the examples, and tells owners to expect “temporary fluctuation in site ranking during the move”. It also advises changing only one thing at a time and redirecting each old URL to its new one. Our post on redesigning a website without losing SEO covers the same discipline. The cheapest time to choose well is before you have a site and a customer base on the wrong address.
A short checklist
- List where your customers actually are, and where you want them to be in two years.
- Check that your preferred name is free in the extensions you are considering.
- Confirm the registration requirements with your registrar, especially for .co.id.
- Register the domain in your own name, with an email address you control. Our domain, hosting and login checklist explains why.
- Note the renewal date, or register for longer, since PANDI allows up to ten years.
- Redirect any extra domains to the main one, and add local signals to the site.
